 8-round vs. 7-round mags for 1911

They fit the extra round in by redesigning the follower.

I have spent many hours teaching cops to shoot and have had the chance to observe the utilization on hundreds of magazines.

I have never seen a difference in reliability between 7 and 8 round mags. I have however, seen a difference between cheap no-name mags and top drawer stuff.

This is one area where you definitely get what you pay for.

 8-round vs. 7-round mags for 1911

Wilson's are top of the line. I don't think follower material is a factor in wear on the gun.

Generally, when a mag wears out and begins to malfunction it has worn out the feed lips and cannot be fixed.

Unless they are really trashed, I mark such mags and save them for practice and training and keep the newest/best for duty/self defense use.
