Anyone have experience with these cartridges?

Chief,

Lucky all you have is a stray dog or cat. I did not mind the feral cat that moused around here. Nor did I mind the my own cat or the neighbor's. Since the coyotes showed up, they are all gone. All you have to to is wait, they eat everything. Even scared the wife back into the house one night when she ran the trash out.

Now I have one mission. I have been eying the .17 as well as the 223 for the same reason you stated. I want a frangible cartridge.

Keep us informed as to what works for you and good luck.

I have found that the .17HMR works awesome on cats, woodchucks, muskrats and raccoons. Raccoons are the most difficult to get a quick kill. I haven't had a chance to try it on beaver and coyotes yet. The .223 also works well on all of these including the beaver and coyotes. I like the .17HMR. more for it frangible bullets in my farm yard and field surroundings where I'm shooting 50 yards or less with a 17 grain bullet. I use the rifle with a 3-9X scope for these small critters to view in on their heads for instant kills.

With regard to previous discussions of the .223, most rifles don't shoot the heavier rounds well. My AR-15 has a target barrel with greater twist which allows the heavier rounds to shoot more accurately. The .223 is suited more for longer body shots up to 200 yards and more. I only have a tactical 4X scope on it so optics are more of a limiting factor. I can hold close distance shots with 4X scope to about 1" groups and usually less. For the long shots I use the .22-250 with 6 1/2 to 20X scope and Bi-pod for accuracy. It has lots more zip as well.

Somewhere in a thread it was suggested that the .17 was going the way of the 5mm. That is why I have held off, I have the 5 and don't want another obsolete rifle. Almost bought the 22 magnum until I read about the propensity of that caliber to ricochet.

I wouldn't let rumors stop you. Back in 1970, I was told the 16 gauge shotgun shell was going to be obsolete. Selling that shotgun was a mistake. My little NewEngland Firearms (NEF) single shot .17HMR was only about $125.00 from Gander Mountain. The Bushnell trophy 3-9 was about $45.00 with scope rings and bore sited.

If you are not sure, a little investment like this can't hurt.

Very true, but I was looking for a small caliber autoloader so the overall package I purchase will be be general use and possibly fit with low light or night scope. I like the M15 but not the price tag.

I can tell you from experience that wax in a 20 ga shell will work just wonders on dogs at close range. I imagine you could use it on cats too. Where I live you can be arrested and put in jail for killings cats and end up doing more time than a murderer. I don't advocate killing pets but feral cats are the bane to small game and song birds all over. Recently I had a feral cat spray my new $2500 lawn tractor. The 45gr / 223 gave him a terrible dose of lead posioning of which he died from.

No matter what anyone says you do not have to put up with this. My neighbors pit bulls and now huskeys have killed three dogs in our neighborhood two of them mine on my property the two yorkeys did not stand a chance. If you want to keep your dogs keep them on your property. 12ga 3" mag 000 buckshot will drop them in one shot. Cats to. I did not use to feel this way but the law is useless in this instance they said their hands are tied you can get a lawyer, he wants 4,000 up front and I cant prove a thing. So now neither can my neighbors.
