Revolvers: SandW vs Ruger
I'm looking at getting a .357 revolver and narrowed down my choices to Ruger GP-141 and S&W 686 plus. Aside from the extra round that comes with 686 plus, what are the strengths and weaknesses of each model? Which gun between the two is a better choice?

What is your intended use?
The GP-141 is blued 4" barrel vs: stainless S&W. I prefer the grooved finger grips like the 686 but never had Uncle Mike's grips. I bought Hogue grips for my Ruger Super RedHawk replacing the standard Ruger grips that also come with the 141. My RedHawk doesn't compare since it is .454 Casull in 7 1/2" barrel. I also have a S&W model 27-2 which is an older version of the S&W model 66. It originally had wood grips that I replaced with Pachmayer's. It is a lighter weight than the 686 particularly with longer barrels. I have the 8 3/8" barrel which isn't available in the 66.
If you really want to shoot and hit what you are aiming at, I'd definitely go with a longer barrel. A 8 3/8" barrel isn't a carry and conceal model. At 25 yards, my groups are about half that when shooting my Colt-Python .357 with 6" barrel. That is partially my fault because of shakiness and tri-focals. My wife has the S&W 340 PD with 1 7/8" barrel (ultra light weight that shoots 38's+357mag). I wouldn't want to have to hit anything very far away with it.
I like stainless models and long barrel lengths. Please note that the angle of the grip is different between the Ruger and S&W models models. If you have a gunshop in your area with a range where you can rent a pistol, it is worth it to determine which fits you the best. I can't shoot some pistols worth a crap.
The 66 & 686 have 6 shots and the 686 Plus has 7 if you are looking for firepower vs weight reduction and bulkiness.
I think both are fine models and you need to determine which feels better in the grip and the action of the trigger. What may be good for me is terrible for you.
I have all sorts of pistols but use my 27-2 when I want to definitely hit something or outshoot my buddies.

My intended use is simply to have a nice quality revolver. Just because I can  No, for real, I don't have much exposure to firearms and would like to get one for home defence. I want to get a pistol and a revolver and see what I'm more comfortable with. With regard to revolvers, I was considering a Taurus 608, which would be nice since it's an 8-shooter, but have read that the construction is inherently weaker than that of S&W. I also don't really care for the hideous S&W model 629 8-shooter (in addition to it being a bit pricey). I wanted to get a 4" barrel for better handling in home defence situations. You're right, I'm gonna need to shoot the gun, before I buy it, to see how it fits, my question had more to do with wether either of these guns has a better quality or if there are any other issues.

I've never owned a Taurus but have been told by those that do, they hate the triggers. Taurus has gone a long way in the last few years with regard to quality. They also have some innovative and glitsy features that they've recently introduced.
Both the Rugers and Smiths are reliable and quality built. You won't go wrong with either. I own a couple dozen pistols but have a few favorites. I don't shoot some of the more expensive Brownings or Colts that I have. You may be able to purchase a few good "Used" pistols and have more of them than just one or two new ones.

If you don't shoot much having too many different guns can get to be confusing during times of stress. You may be better off with two revolvers of the same model but with different barrel lengths. If you target practice with a 4" barrel or less you may be disappointed with your accuracy. If you have a 2 1/2" and 6" or 8 3/8" the feel will be similar and you have the best of both worlds.
Unless you practice allot, you won't be able to hit with accuracy with either a semi-automatic pistol or short barrel revolver.

For the home defense gun I'm leaning towards Beretta 92FS Brigadier. I read and heard a lot of good things about it. I mostly like it's reliability record. I think most of my practice will be with that gun. Again, I'm gonna have to try it out before I commit. And I figured I'd get a revolver as a backup... so many guns, so little money...

Beretta, Walter, Glock and Sig Arms are the most popular brands purchased for military and police. I like Springfield Armory's version similar to the Glock but don't have one yet. I also like some of the newer poly frames for lightness.
My hand don't seem to fit Beretta's as nice as some of the others. I have a Sig in .40 S&W caliber with LaserMax sight through the return spring mechanism. Battery runs down on its own after a few months. That is an all steel (stainles) model in black. Also have a Ruger 9 mm model P94 with 15 round clips.
9mm is lots less expensive to shoot but does not have the knockdown power of the .40 S&W. Lots of people like the 1911 version pistols in .45ACP. Those don't fit my hand well and confuse the heck out of me with the safety or lack of it.
I consider the Beretta to be a high end pistol. Reliability is there on all of them until you drag them through allot of mud and/or don't clean them very often.
A man can never own enough guns.

Those are all good guns and a lot of them, like your P94 pack a lot of ammo, unfortunately, in NJ I am limited to 10 rounds in any DA auto. 
I thought of getting the 1911 in 45ACP, but it's only 8 rounds and they ARE expensive, so I figured, I'd get something that I could afford to shoot.

Springfield Armory has an XD pistol in polyframe that is kinda a copy of the Glock in .45ACP but also has a side safety. It is a 13+1 round capacity. You must be able to purchase a 10 round clip in NJ. It is really compact and lightweight for a full size pistol.
