What you say is true except the part about the Marines, I have NEVER known a Marine to exaggerate.
Yes! you are 100% correct about traveling from target, you are knowledgeable about projectiles and that is good, real good and I am glad to know people think of that. I was not aware of your enviroment. Most people would not even give it any thought about what happens to their projectile after it leaves the target. They just shoot at it. Even HPs aren't going to stop unless you hit your target and theone thing you need to add into the Formula is Fear produced Panic. If someone is Hell bent in killing you, it is hard to keep composure. Therefore you want something you can handle quickly, instictively and effectively, accuracy will not be measured in inches but by how many hit the target. So for defense, it may be best to pick a smaller caliber, one that enables many rounds to follow the first and with not an abundance of recoil recovery time. Hand Grenades will usually work well too.

hand grenades..

that's a thought

: )

you mentioned in another thread about shooting 500 rounds of .45ACP in one day and having bad elbow pain afterwards. What is it that you were shooting, a pistol or revolver? Should you expect to take such abuse on your joints with any .45 caliber gun?

It was a Pistol a M1911A1 to be exact.
I was practicing for a Match (Pistol E.I.C. was part of our Rifle Aggregate scores) and as I said I am not the Best Pistol Shooter, I was handed a Tin (840 rds) of Ammo and two M1911A1s and told to go practice, for I was having a flinching problem when shooting the 45, I kinda had a physological fear for them and so when I fired them, I flinched, I was to go and shoot until I didn't flinch any more. I didn't flinch anymore after the 500 rds. I would say you will get that Elbow jolt regardless and only if you were as dumb as I was to fire so many in a single day.

DR
Thanks for the info on cartridges. Federal Hydrashok seems to a common favorite.

Shot some 9mm and 45ACP last night. I noticed to my surprise that the recoil wasn't that much greater for the .45. Definitely the caliber to go for.

Well, I'm gonna go order my gun now. Settled on Ruger P-90. Only 8 rounds, but everything else about this gun is solid, so I hope this will be a good gun to learn the ropes.

Enjoy! and try to keep the eyes open when shooting. No matter what you get, shooting is always a great time.
I ahve a 100 meter Range on the land and shoot often. I have a Ruger Single Six I use when I am fishing, I will shoot at any target of oppurtunity, such as Water Skippers, Dragon Flies, Floating Leaves, Sticks etc. When doing that I do NOT use sights and because of the water, I am able to see and adjust. Sand Pits are good for this as well. Have Fun.
P.S. stay away from Egyptian or Isreali 45, the crap will barely make it out your barrel.

Now, we can resolve this argument once and for all if WW just took his 1911 to the mexican border and tried out his theory. WW, please file a field-trip report with us when you get back : )

I would rather NOT take a 45, for I am not an accomplished Pistol Shooter, I would prefer to take a Remmington 700 or my very trusty M-1A.

WW, you're missing the point (no pun intended); the object is to find out whether your trusty Colt .45 will blow the wetbacks back across the Rio Grand (like you say it should) or whether they drop dead right on the spot (as per DR).

We need experimental proof, you know what I'm saying? : )

DR and Denis

I have some video of Afghan Terrorists being taken out with a .50 cal, Sniper Rifle. It is about a 2.3 meg file and it shows the majority of one terrorists body, becoming extremely airborne after being hit at an estimated range of 700 plus meters. tell me where to send it.

I have fired the Bolt Action .50 Cal and there is No kick to speak off, due to a buffer and spring in the rear stock, like the M-16.

A Naval Gun will fire a 2300 pound projectile over 25 miles, yet the ship doesn't move, even when several guns are fired off of Port or Starboard at the SAME time.

WW,

Sometimes this kind of footage is therapeutic and sometimes it just grosses me out. But a high velocity .50 round shot from a rifle supported by a stand is a bit different from your .45ACP round.

Speaking of my .45
Went to the range to shoot my Kimber for the first time. Went through 250 rounds, American Eagle and Independence, all standard 230 grain FMJ; not a single hickup. that's some sweet gun.

If I knew what I was doing, they'd be all on target, too : )
