8-round vs. 7-round mags for 1911
I notice that most Colt .45 type pistols come with a 7-round mag standard, but an 8-round mag for this type of a gun is available; it has the same dimensions as the 7-round one. Why not switch to 8-round as a standard? The only thing I can think of is that maybe a 7-round mag feeds more reliably. Has anyone here had a good/bad experience with 8-round mags for 1911s?

They fit the extra round in by redesigning the follower.
I have spent many hours teaching cops to shoot and have had the chance to observe the utilization on hundreds of magazines.
I have never seen a difference in reliability between 7 and 8 round mags. I have however, seen a difference between cheap no-name mags and top drawer stuff.
This is one area where you definitely get what you pay for.

DR, that's great to know.
How do Wilson mags compare as far as reliability?
Also, is it better for the gun in the long run if the follower is made of polymer vs. steel (to avoid exess stress on the slide)? It's far cheaper to replace a mag (or even just the follower) when you see it wearing out than to replace the slide.

Wilson's are top of the line. I don't think follower material is a factor in wear on the gun.
Generally, when a mag wears out and begins to malfunction it has worn out the feed lips and cannot be fixed.
Unless they are really trashed, I mark such mags and save them for practice and training and keep the newest/best for duty/self defense use.
