Legacy Puma P92 lever action rifle in .454 Casull
When I did a web search I figured out that Legacy Sports is only 25 miles from my house.
Also noticed that they make the same thing in 480 Ruger.
I wonder if they are going for the 50 S&W next???
I think I will stick to my Marlin 45-70 for the big bore lever medicine.
At .458 it just about splits the difference between a .451 Colt/Casull and a .475 bullets in the Ruger chambering.
Last year, Brian Pierce(the guy who wrote the article I sent)took his Marlin 45-70 and Cor-Bon ammo to Africa to hunt Cape Buffalo.
He whacked an old bull and the bullet penetrated both shoulders and exited. While examining the kill they found that a cow had been standing just out of sight beyond the bull and the bullet had taken her through the shoulders and killed her too.
Kinda hard to beat that sort of power. I don't think my 416 Rigby will shoot through that much meat.

As things go, it has turned out I'm delaying the purchase of the rifle. Got a Stihl MM-55 power sweep and rototiller last night instead.
It is always best to buy the things you need first. The county road crew last winter peeled a bunch of sod off the shoulder of the road during snow removal for the full width of my farm property. They then scattered stone for about 20 feet in for the full width.
I worked at it for about 2 1/2 hours with almost 2 tanks of gas and got about 1/3 of it done. I then get to go to the other farm and do the same. In town where I live, they filled the cracks in the road with tar late last fall. The snow plow peeled this excess off and threw black chunks in everyones yards. Seems like there are lots of uses for this tool.
Back to the rifle. I agree the .45-70 is a better round for hunting in thick brush or for large game. There are better rounds for large game than that. I'm not a big game hunter. I have my .30-06 semi-auto and .30-30 lever for deer. We hike quite often in Michigan's U.P. and our best friends are moving to Munising/Marquette area in about a year. Coming across a black bear while hiking is a concern and usually pack a pistol, just in case. I don't know if I'd ever use the .454 Casull rifle for anything more than target shooting or deer hunting. Because of my other guns, it would only be done for the sake of doing it.
The only reason why I have the Super Redhawk in .454 Casull is because I got it so cheap, about $250.00 below retail. I always like to have several weapons in the same caliber.

Black bears are not nearly as had to kill as a Brown bear or a Kodiak. You would not believe the crop of fur those critters can grow in a place with really cold winters.
I shot a two year old Brownie off someones porch with a 12 gauge Brenneke slug some years back. The slug went though the bear lengthwise and into the dirt behind it.
At first I didn't recognize the slug because it had a wad of hair clinging to it that would have filled a small teacup.
Investigation revealed it had cut all that material at the entrance hole and drug it all the way through the critter.
I became a believer in heavy bullets that day.

BTW.... if you think a buck a pop is expensive shooting, stay away from the 416 Rigby.
The retail is about $6.25 a cartridge. Thank God for reloading presses.
Like you said, it was too hard to pass on a gun at wholesale price.

Got the Puma last night! Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. Since it was imported, it has quite a bit of
grease (Cosmoline) on it. Needs to be thoroughly cleaned before use.

Legacy Puma P92 lever action rifle in .454 Casull
I finally got to shoot the Puma this weekend!!!!!
I started with my Winchester 250gr. JHP having light/medium loads. At 50 yards and open sights (blurry sights from bifocals) with the gun resting on sandbags I managed some groups of 2" and less. It shot low by about 6" from the factory setting. Recoil was minimal (less than a .30-30) The gun's profile is almost exactly like that of a .30-30. A person could shoot this all day.
I moved-up to my Hornady 240 gr. JHP. That shot about 12-14 inches higher than the Winchester rounds. Holy samolies (believe that is what Jack Lemon alsways said in "Grouchy Old Men" and the sequel.) the recoil is horrific. I shot 3 rounds and that was more than enough. I had about a 4-5" group.
I then went to my Mag-Tech loads that are 260 gr. JFP. They are just a little less "Hot" than the Hornady's. I shot a 3 round group of about 2" with them. They were about 10" higher than the Winchester's.
I'm going to stick with the Winchester light/medium loads. The hollow points expand in sand to a perfect round shape the size of a quarter. They definitely are more powerful than a .44 mag.
Wow! Can that baby kick!!! I'm worried if the gun can hold up to that kind of impact. The Puma appears to be constructed well. The latching side rails are triple the thickness of my .30-30 but the web of steel surround it on the receiver is about the same thickness. I definitely will be safe shooting the lighter loads.
The finish isn't perfect but I'm happy with it.
